Park History
The 80+ acres which make up the park were originally part of the Alexandria Reservoir. The dams and spillway wall area which takes the overflow from the upper lake to the lower basin were a WPA project back in the Roosevelt Era. The walking trail which now completely circles the lake was a project which was started in the 1980’s by the original Park Board which was disbanded by the City Council in 1989. The original ball fields were constructed by the Campbell County Jaycees, along with assistance from local Army Reserve Units.
In 1996 a new group, lead by John Stein, took up the challenge to recreate the park. At this point, the area was fully overgrown with weeds and the lake could not even be seen from Alexandria Drive. This group began the clean up and planning for a new park. The park was officially dedicated in September of 1997. The City Council also established a Volunteer Park and Recreation Committee to help further goals and objectives for parks and recreation in the city. This group transitioned to an official Alexandria Park & Recreation Board in 2006.
During this time many projects have been completed: 9 acre fishing lake, playground area, baseball field, basketball courts, over 3 miles of paved walking trails, several nature trails, Frisbee Golf, handicap accessible fishing pier, restrooms, gravel parking lots are now paved, a large picnic shelter by the lake with a stone grill (which can be reserved by city residents for a small fee), and a smaller shelter by the playground. Annual events include an Easter Egg Hunt, Arbor Day Tree Give-Away, Fishing Derby, Summer movie nights, Dog Day, the Haunted Walk. Check on the Park Calendar of Events tab for current events.
The numerous founding park contributors’ names are listed on a sign in the park. Currently the park is being well maintained by the City Maintenance Crew.
WETLANDS: This is on the Lake Trail just beyond the main picnic shelter. It is for preservation of a natural forested wetland, which assists in water purification and habitat for wildlife and amphibians. There are also other wetland areas in the park: two toward the rear of Lake Trail, and the lower wetlands area – the lower basin, which can be found at the base of Wetland Trail.
